Eagles place Jalen Hurts on Injured Reserve with blood clot

Despite earlier reports to the contrary on Saturday, the Eagles have placed starting quarterback Jalen Hurts on Injured Reserve because of a blood clot in his calf.

The Eagles officially announced that decision on Saturday afternoon.

Hurts, 28, will now miss at least four games on IR, but it’s possible he misses more. His health is the Eagles’ primary concern at this point.

The earliest Hurts will be eligible to return is Week 11 against the Steelers when the Eagles return from the bye week. But he will at least miss games against the Panthers, Cowboys, Commanders and Giants.

The Eagles will turn to backup Tanner McKee, who will make his third-career start on Sunday against the Panthers. The other quarterbacks on the roster are rookie Cole Payton and Joe Milton, who was just signed off the Cowboys’ practice squad.

The Eagles on Thursday announced that Hurts would miss Week 6 because of a blood clot that was discovered last Saturday on an ultrasound in London. The team’s medical staff determined it was safe for Hurts to play but a subsequent ultrasound on Wednesday evening revealed that the superficial blood clot had moved.

In a lengthy statement released by the team on Thursday, the Eagles said they had been in contact with the league office regarding the matter. They also said they would determine the next course of treatment and that Hurts’ “health and safety are our highest priority.”

Hurts this season has led the Eagles to a 2-3 record while completing 57.8% of his passes for 933 yards with 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He got off to a hot start in 2026 but had cooled down since.

In addition to placing Hurts on IR on Saturday, the Eagles also made some other roster moves. They signed RB Jaydon Blue to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and then elevated OLB Keyshawn James-Newby and S Cole Wisniewski for the Panthers game.

Blue will join Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele as the healthy running backs on the 53-man roster. Both James-Newby and Wisniewski were seventh-round picks in April.

The Eagles did not activate any players from IR so that means at least one more week for Landon Dickerson, Eli Stowers, Grant Calcaterra and Jakorian Bennett. All four had their practice windows opened this week.
